Are you using Windows or Unix?
If Windows then try changing the
< ltn12.source.file(io.open("test.txt", "r")),
to
> ltn12.source.file(io.open("test.txt", "rb")),
The next step is to start adding diagnostic print() statements into
smtp.lua.
