this is a lua problem, not a swig one.
l.insert should probably be l:insert
the colon operator means that you are invoking the method insert on l.
it is syntactic sugar for l.insert( l, item )

i presume the SWIG example code is wrong....
let me know if you try this change and find that that's the case.
