Yes, but these days it's usually only to do stuff that isn't supported
by normal compilers. (SIMD instructions, CPU specific synchronization
instructions for lock-free constructs, and some other stuff.)
...and of course, quite a few do it just for fun, usually on old
hardware (C64, 8086 PCs, ...), or on low end hand held devices.
