The simple answer is that LuaJIT will be very fast
compared to other VM implementations. No one will be
embarassed at a party for using Lua.

As of the time of this writing the score for Lua was
15.31. A properly compiled Lua 5.0 (not the Debian
shared library version) would get a score of 17.82.
Lua 5.1-alpha would get 18.02.

LuaJIT 1.0.3 would get around 24.04. Java scores 17.06
and GCC scores 25.54. ;-)

But note that GCC, Java, Python and Perl suffer badly
from unimplemented or not working benchmarks.
Realistically their scores would be higher. But it is
my belief that the overall ranking would still be:

  Perl < Python < Lua < Java < LuaJIT < GCC
