Thanks, Roberto!!
Counting matches instead of replacements IMHO is simpler to understand
and use. It also provides an easy way to count how many times a given
pattern occur in a string.

path= "/many/nested/directories"
_,n= path:gsub("/",{})  -- n counts "/" chars
