Rather than considering that "Lua just extends other software [in C++]", you might prefer to reword it "Lua lives in symbiosis with C and C++, so that you can use the right tool for the right job, rather than a single wrong tool for everything".

If you're into number crunching, this symbiosis should be especially invaluable to you.
