It is hard to resist adding an opinion.
My experience is that most software projects that use script, have selected
the language based on non-technical considerations. The selection is based
entirely on sales/marketing preconceptions or and/or the prejudices of an
encumbent (but not very talented) software engineer.
Lua does not really have a publicity/marketing division, so it is difficult
to see how it might compete with C# or Java.
As an example, methinks tthat World of Warcrafts success with Lua has had
more impact that any arguments of technical merit.
Lua is also in a different headspace. It is not just a language, it is
"an extensible extension language".
