Fuzzy search

I'm merging data on what I will call a description field.  Sometimes the
spelling of this description varies slightly.  Here are some examples:

1. "Grounds and Maintenance" versus "Grounds & Maintenance"
2. "Lates Fees" versus "Late Fees"

I have two basic questions: (1) Where would I search the archives in case
someone has already asked a similar question? (2) Is there a "fuzzy search"
function/algorithm available which would show these strings as "close to
being equal"?
