Thanks! I think that most of the work will be in buffering,
interfacing with Lua, future management etc. So I would
rather take a look at ASIO and libevent just for inspiration
than adding another dependency.

They say, libev :
A full-featured and high-performance (see benchmark) event loop that is loosely modelled after libevent, but without its limitations and bugs. 

I can't say if it's right as I didn't code in C :)
However, libev event-loop seen well documented to me.
