Thanks for the responses to my query. Gsub was an obvious solution. How did
I miss that?
In retrospect, this has to be one of the dumbest questions I ever asked.
Like the mainframe dinosaur, perhaps my time with a keyboard has passed.
In response to the use of EBCDIC, 90% of the world's financial transactions
go there; 70% of the world's airline reservations, and 60% of the world's
data still abides in EBCDIC bliss. Its not the platform that's obsolete,
it's this dummy.
