Maybe this is because so far you've not started a sponsorship
campaign with a specific goal (featurewise + moneywise)?
Just have a look at Wikipedia: they raise most of their money in
their yearly campaigns and comparatively little outside of it.
Many companies have budgets for end-of-year philantropy, so this
is a popular time to start such a campaign. It's already a bit
late for that now.
Also that donation button on lua.org isn't exactly easy to find. :-)
In your case it might help if you created a not-for-profit entity,
too. That way contributions from individuals are tax-exempt. Doing
this on a world-wide basis is probably hard, though.
It's all about creating a constant buzz with PR and campaigning
and so on. I'm not good at that either, but apparently it *does*
help to raise funds.
