Excerpts from Jose Torre-Bueno's message of Mon Apr 09 18:17:56 +0200 2012:
> I wonder if anybody can direct me to an "assume-I-know-nothing" tutorial on downloading and installing packages. I am not familiar with the basic mechanism of Linux make and its competitors and further have to deal with the subtle differences needed to instal in OSX. I am also just learning about the various repositories people use to post their contributions and the various packaging methods used such as Luarocks vs. tarballs etc. I know that basically any directory structure can be set up but Lua and its add-ons seem to have some standard structure as the default and understanding that would help also.
Did you ever tried HomeBrew[1] ?

Its similar to macports, but they say its easuer to install (i am not a mac user myself).
Every friend i know who uses a mac recomends it over macports.
