It's not a necessary word, but in this case, I think that it's meaning is clearer. If you used "memorize", there *may* be more of a need to clarify what was doing the memorizing and why.
Yes, the word "memoize" has now a specific association with the technique when used in computers. As you said, it makes things clearer and that's the only reason I could see for a new word.
