OP also did not state the OS he is using, nor did he state the 
length of the command he is trying to execute. But the problem may 
not actually be one of length. Was there a cwd issue? A string 
escaping issue? Can you really trust him to have diagnosed the 
problem as an issue with length? How about some code?

Unless he pose the question more intelligently, the best anyone 
can do to help him is make a guess. IMHO this kind of guessing 
reflects badly on the OP. I would not trust his diagnosis.
