it just replies with a link to https://groups.google.com/group/lua-l/subscribe.
it does not subscribe you to the list.
as a sidenote, I'm frankly surprised that google groups doesn't already
number among the services google has summarily discontinued.
I think it would be nice if the decision to use google groups was
reconsidered.
