I'm using Lua to implement object-based scripting for a Lucasarts/Sierra-style 2D adventure game engine, which is turning out to be useful for a heck of a lot more than adventure games. I chose lua over python, ruby, and others because its syntax would be easy to teach to the rest of the team, and because of the ease in inheriting and overriding objects.
I am also the author and maintainer of the PlutoLibrary for persistence.
