Another good book to help you understand scripting languages and their
purpose, useage and implementation - Game Scripting Mastery. They have a
full working example of a C app scripted with Lua 4 and explain briefly how
to accomplish this.
And don't forget "Constructing Language Processors for Little Languages,"
which is a little much but also very good....
