Thanks, Klaus. I had googled and found the LC_CTYPE trick within a few
minutes of my post. I apologize for my lack of patience - I should have
looked it up first.

I love the way Lua tables can manage this kind of thing so simply and
beautifully. And it is quite fast on my Linux box. A change from Bube &
Dame to Jack & Queen, and I  have my U.S. version!
