Just to be exact, git ~= github. You can run and use git without github.
Nowadays I use git and on github. Used svn on google code before, I
was in fact pretty happy with svn, switched since I got complaints
from people who refused to get a Google account, due to privacy
concerns. Nowadays I learned to love proper github pull requests as
they are much easier to handle as mantainer as requesting patches per
email like before.
